Jump Start

What is Jump Start?

Jump Start is a program that provides you an opportunity to be a part of a learning community for the fall semester, learn about UNC Asheville and college expectations, and develop skills that will help you transition smoothly from high school to college.

Who participates in Jump Start?

Jump Start is by invitation only. You have been identified by an Admissions Counselor as someone who can benefit from this program. Students who participate in Jump Start come from all backgrounds and levels of academic preparation.

What is the program like?

Jump Start provides you with intensive academic preparation, supported by dedicated faculty and staff. Participants in Jump Start will also have specialized guidance provided by Advising and Learning Support.

How does the program work?

First year students typically take 4 courses that last 16 weeks (1 semester).  Students in the Jump Start program will take 2 courses for the first 8 weeks (Term 1) of the semester.  Then they’ll take another 2 courses for the second 8 weeks (Term 2) of the semester. Overall, students will take the same amount of courses as those not in the Jump Start program.

What classes will I take?

You will take required classes with your fellow Jump Start students that will count towards UNC Asheville’s Liberal Arts Core (LAC) requirements.

Where will I live and what will I do?

In the Jump Start Program, you can still choose which residence hall you would like to live in.  You can also choose your own roommate if you already have someone in mind.  Also, there will be educational and social programs that you’ll attend with your fellow Jump Start participants.

When does Jump Start begin?

The Jump Start program begins on Sunday, August 14th, 2016.  Students will be able move into their fall semester room assignment and participate in a REQUIRED four day academic preparation and leadership development experience (aka “PREP WEEK”).
NOTE: You will not be able to participate in any Prerendezblue programs because our “prep week” experience is during the same days.

What is the cost?

When you pay the Jump Start fee, your enrollment deposit is waived. Students pay a fee of $300 (non-refundable after May 15), which covers the cost of social and educational programming (PREP WEEK) prior to the start of classes. Participants pay the same price for their tuition, fees, textbooks, meal plans, and housing as any student attending UNC Asheville.

Can I apply for Financial Aid?

Yes! All Jump Start participants are eligible to apply for financial aid. To apply for Financial Aid for 2015-2016, you must complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) for the 2015-2016 academic year as soon as possible. Visit our Financial Aid website for details about the FAFSA and the Financial Aid process.
