About Asheville

Less than two miles from UNC Asheville’s campus, you’ll find one of the coolest downtown districts in the South, full of restaurants, art galleries, shops and concert venues. For our students, Asheville offers city living in a mountain setting – the best of both worlds.

With the vibrant city of Asheville as our hometown and the Blue Ridge Mountains as our backyard, you’ll quickly find a path into this metropolis in the mountains of Western North Carolina. Explore the trails and rivers with Outdoor Programs or report on local issues through your mass communication class. Engage with the community through our many centers and institutes, such as the Key Center for Community Citizenship and Service Learning and the National Environmental Modeling and Analysis Center (NEMAC).

A 30-minute drive from UNC Asheville will take you to more than 500,000 acres of National Forest, with outlets for whitewater rafting, kayaking, fishing, skiing and zip lining.

UNC Asheville also has close partnerships with area employers, such as Mission Health System and the National Forest Service, so you can discover internships and careers without leaving campus.
